From our Community Newsletter - July 2026

It's that time of year again when weever fish make an appearance along our beaches.

Where are they found?

Weever fish bury themselves beneath the sand, particularly in shallow water around low tide, where the waves are breaking. Unfortunately, it's very easy to step on one without seeing it. You can wear rubber soled beach or swim shoes to help prevent a sting.

What should you do if you're stung?

The most effective first aid is to immerse the affected hand or foot in hot water - as hot as you can comfortably tolerate and as soon as possible. Keep it in the hot water for as long as you can, as this helps to reduce the pain.

If there's a lifeguard on duty, they'll have access to hot water and will be able to help. If there isn't a lifeguard nearby, pop into a local shop or café and ask if they can provide a bowl of hot water.

Take care if you're heading to the beach, and enjoy the sunshine safely!
